I'm 45 years old—and I'm in my freedom era
Jun 30, 2024From guest blogger Julie Silvestri Wong
Can I tell you a little secret? I LOVE BIRTHDAYS!
I love mine, I love yours, and heck, if there is a stranger on the street with a cupcake and balloons, I need to know who they are celebrating! Last month, I had a big birthday—I turned 45. I’m sure you’re thinking, “Julia, no one throws a 45th birthday bash!” And I didn't understand why until my husband kindly filled me in. It’s because I’m now officially middle-aged!
Wait, what?
I know age is just a number, but 45 feels like a milestone. I’m sure there is a lot to unpack, but I think what it comes down to for me is that I’ve officially lived more years than I have left... and it makes me wonder what I have accomplished. How have I lived my life? How have I loved?
My list of accomplishments seems to pale compared to how I have loved people. When you were young, did you have a bucket list of adventures you wanted to go on? Maybe it was a dating profile-type list of what you wanted your future partner to be like. Or even a 20-year plan to get you to the pinnacle of your career? I had all of those lists and many more. I do love a list!
The thing is, now, as a middle-aged lady, those lists seem so unimportant compared to the love I have given and received. Love has shaped who I am and how I love more than any accomplishment ever could.
So now I’m excited to be middle-aged! I’m claiming it as my freedom era: The freedom from the lists and accomplishments, gaining the freedom to live my life fully surrounded by love!
