7 Signs You Might Need Postpartum Support

"I’m fine—it’s just a lot.”

If you’ve said that recently after having a baby, you’re definitely not alone. As a postpartum doula and perinatal mental health advocate, I’ve heard it time and time again from new moms who say they’re “doing okay”—but are quietly struggling.

The truth is, postpartum can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, even when things are “going well.” It’s okay if you're not okay. If you’re unsure whether what you’re feeling is just part of the new-mom adjustment or something more, here are seven signs it might be time for a little extra support:

You feel like you're always “on”

If your brain won’t shut off and you can’t relax—even when help is offered—you might be stuck in survival mode. Constant hyper-awareness is exhausting.

You’re crying more than you expected

A few tears? Totally normal. But if you’re crying every day or feel emotionally raw most of the time, your nervous system might be waving a little white flag.

You can’t sleep… even when the baby does

Interrupted sleep comes with the territory. But if you’re lying awake, wired and anxious, even when you’re desperate for rest, your body may be carrying more stress than it can handle alone.

You feel disconnected from your baby, yourself or your favourite people

If you’re going through the motions but feeling numb, distant, or unlike yourself, please know that doesn’t make you a bad parent or partner. It makes you human and deserving of care.

Everyday things feel impossible

If texting back, brushing your teeth or making a sandwich feels like climbing a mountain, that’s not laziness. That’s burnout. And it’s time for some rest.

You’re snappy, ragey or constantly on edge

Postpartum rage is real. If you’re simmering under the surface or snapping often, it’s a sign your nervous system needs support, not shame.

You keep telling yourself, “this is just how it is”

If you’ve convinced yourself that it’s supposed to be this hard—pause. There are gentler ways to walk through this chapter. Support isn’t a luxury. It’s care you deserve.

Postpartum support isn’t just for crisis moments. It’s for prevention, peace of mind, and making sure you are held, too.
