From our 2022 resident scholar and certified health coach, Sacha Welsh, founder of Welsh Wellness

For those of you who don’t know me, my practice specializes in fertility, pregnancy and postpartum health. It’s my absolute passion to help ease the challenges of motherhood—whether it’s by eating for more energy,  getting better sleep, managing pregnancy risks/complications, or just getting pregnant! Anything that falls under the motherhood umbrella from a wellness perspective has me written all over it: I’m here for you

That being said, I want you to learn more about two fertility nutrients that are often not talked about and are easily forgotten about when trying to conceive. They’re also both totally essential nutrients that we need anyway. So here’s what you need to know.

Selenium

Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that plays a critical role in our fertility. It helps during the late stages of follicle development, helping to lead to a healthy environment for the egg. Additionally, it is helpful for immune response and thyroid hormone production.

Foods that are high in selenium include brazil nuts, eggs, tuna, shrimp, mushrooms and oysters.

Iodine

Iodine is another crucial mineral for fertility. Like selenium, it plays a crucial role in our thyroid function. Low iodine levels in a woman is associated with hypothyroidism, which in turn can be related to fertility issues. Studies have also shown that women with even slightly low iodine levels had a harder time conceiving compared to women with sufficient iodine levels.

Foods that are high in iodine include seaweed, cow’s milk, iodized salt, fish and oysters.

Keeping an eye out for these nutrients when you’re trying to conceive is an easy, natural way to help boost fertility.
