How to carve out alone time as a mom

Want Some Alone Time?

One of the most startling realizations you’ll ever have as a mom is the fact that alone time simply doesn’t happen anymore. If you want alone time, then you need to be proactive and carve it out yourself. Here are some ideas that you can try out when you want some time to go from being “mom” to simply being “me.”

Bring your phone or tablet into play when you do chores

It might surprise you just how effective watching a favourite show or listening to your favourite music can be when it comes to creating the effect of alone time. The next time you need to do a load of laundry or have to scrub out the tub, put on  your earbuds and let something fun play on your phone or tablet.

Have the family  help out during chore time

Moms lose a lot of alone time potential when they have to do tons of clean up after meals or doing anything that might remotely be considered “down time.” You can free up more time for “you time” by having everyone help out with the chores. For instance, instead of clearing the dinner table yourself, have everyone bring their own plate into the kitchen, scrape their plates into the trash, and put them in the sink.

Get up an hour earlier than your kids (or go to bed an hour later)

This one can be a bit hard, but it’s worth it if you really can’t find any other time to be alone. Get up an hour earlier than your kids, and take the time to simply be alone. Enjoy coffee by yourself. Get a workout in. Or just curl up in bed and read a book!

Encourage self-motivated play with kids

One of the best things you can do as a parent is to help your children learn to play by themselves. This doesn’t mean you should never play with your kids, but encouraging self-motivated or independent play is essential if you want kids to develop a stronger imagination and the ability to play without someone else guiding them. Best of all, when your kid is occupied, you can take the time to do something for yourself.

Alone time can be elusive as a mom, but it doesn’t have to be!
